Knowling graduated from McCutcheon High School. He was Rookie of The Year in 2004, a recipient of the Don Payne Pitching Award in 2004 and 2005. Brandon was named All-Conference, 1st Team All Area, and All-State Honorable Mention in 2004 and 2005.

Before coming to IPFW, Brandon attended Kaskaskia Community College.
