Garrett graduated in the top 10 of his class at Lewis Cass High School, where 2006 IPFW graduate Tyler Fowler and current Mastodon Mark Carden attended.

Garrett was voted four-time All-Conference, All-Area, All-State and Team MVP. Garrett was selected as the IHSBCA Junior of the Year and as participant in the IHSBCA North/South All-Star series his senior was voted the MVP of the series.

In football, Garret was on the North/South All-Star team, while being voted the Class 2A Player of the Year. He was an All-Conference, All-Area, and All-State three years in a row. His team won three conference championships and one regional championship.

In basketball, he was 1st team All-Conference and All-Area in 2007, and team MVP in 2006 and 2007. He won two sectional championships and one conference championship.

Garrett is the son of David and Robin Seagraves, his sister Lynnsey was a three-time National Champion diver at Auburn University.
