Sam graduated from Lafayette Central Catholic. In 2004 and 2007 he won the Class A baseball state championship. He was a two time All-Area player, selected to the IHSBCA Junior All-Star team, and the IHSBCA North/South All-Star team.

In basketball, Sam was All-Area and East/West All-Star, his team was twice semi-state runner-up and once as a regional runner-up.

Sam is son of Brian and Julie Walker; his father was starter on the 1980 Purdue Final Four team and selected Co-MVP with #1 draft Joe Barry Carroll.
