Cincinnati, OH - The IPFW women's track and field team opened the outdoor portion of the season with a second place finish at the University of Cincinnati Early Bird Relays.

Powered by first place finishes from Valerie Hardesty in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and a 1-2 finish by Crystina and Crystal Martinez in the 5,000 meter run, the Mastodons finished only behind host Cincinnati.

Hardesty finished the steeplechase in a time of 11:46.56, nearly eight seconds better than the second place finisher.

Crystina Martinez set a new school record, shattering the previous mark of 17:30 set by Ashley Ritchey in 2007, by 20-seconds in a time of 17:10.15. Crystal Martinez also crushed that previous record with a time of 17.17.08.

""The twin's races were phenomenal." head coach Mike Fruchey said.

"It really is a testament to their relentless work ethic and dedication. Just to put it in perspective, Crystal was All-league at the indoor meet two weeks ago in a time of 17:27 and the conference champion ran 17:24. To have this type of huge breakthrough is awesome. I am really looking forward to next week's Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University to see how the twins will run in the 10,000 meter race."
