Cincinnati, OH - The IPFW women's track and field team opened the outdoor portion of the season with a second place finish at the University of Cincinnati Early Bird Relays. Powered by first place finishes from Valerie Hardesty in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and a 1-2 finish by Crystina and Crystal Martinez in the 5,000 meter run, the Mastodons finished only behind host Cincinnati. Hardesty finished the steeplechase in a time of 11:46.56, nearly eight seconds better than the second place finisher. Crystina Martinez set a new school record, shattering the previous mark of 17:30 set by Ashley Ritchey in 2007, by 20-seconds in a time of 17:10.15. Crystal Martinez also crushed that previous record with a time of 17.17.08. ""The twin's races were phenomenal." head coach Mike Fruchey said. "It really is a testament to their relentless work ethic and dedication. Just to put it in perspective, Crystal was All-league at the indoor meet two weeks ago in a time of 17:27 and the conference champion ran 17:24. To have this type of huge breakthrough is awesome. I am really looking forward to next week's Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University to see how the twins will run in the 10,000 meter race." Cincinnati Early Bird Relay Team Results: 1.
